Grooving is most often a precision operation, requiring a high degree of accuracy with low tolerances . To guarantee this level of accuracy, a procedure will be developed using the a rough out, semi-finish, and finish. A tool should be selected based on the lathe, material, and precision of the groove.

Old lathes are apt to chatter because the spindle bearings are worn out. Lathes that are constantly used to machine heavy parts tend to chatter more then light duty machines. Also, in the aerospace industries, exotic metals are used extensively. The hardness of these metals by nature may cause chatter when being grooved. All of these conditions will have an affect on the decision of what type of cutting tool to use.
