Boring on a lathe, like boring on a mill, is defined as the enlarging of a existing hole. This hole can either be drilled, cast, forged, or molded.. As with mill boring the need is usually based upon tolerance and/or finish requirements.

Most boring (as shown above) is accomplished with a boring bar mounted in the tool post.

The animation on the left shows a boring bar with a cutting tool mounted at a 90 degree angle to the axis of the bar. There is usually a set screw on the very end that holds the tool in place.

Below is a graphic showing a typical front entrance boring operation (left) and a non-typical rear entrance boring operation (right)

The graphic on the left shows how more than one tool can be mounted in a boring bar to achieve more than one operation in a single pass. This is called "gang" tooling.
