The V configuration is most useful within the shop. Round and square parts can be placed in a V and the work piece will be on center without respect of the diameter or the dimension of the square piece. Being V shaped the center head with the blade installed is used to find the center of round, octagonal and square stock. The center head is also used for the measurement of the stock diameter. By scribing a line using the blade to guide the line will pass through the center of the material. Rotate the part and scribe a 2nd line. The two lines will intersect at the center. Locating centers in the ends of round bars or circular work of any kind is the principal use of this tool but can also used on octagonal and square stock.
