Combination square is a basic set of four or five tools, consists of a: Square head, Protractor head , Center head , and Rule blade. Some square heads come with a small scribe stored in the head.

This combination set is one of the most versatile and useful layout and measuring tools used in the shop. Although usually illustrated as a set with all attachments and heads clamped to the blade it would be difficult to use as depicted. All of the attachments can be used alone or in combination with the blade. With the exception of the channel that permits the blade to be moved into position and clamped, the blade is like any other steel rule with graduations of 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 10ths, 20ths, 50ths, and 100ths.

Increased use of CNC machining centers has reduced the need for scribing a layout. However the combination square still remains a very useful tool. R.S.
