Metals are the primary materials fabricated in the machine shop and will be the material of focus in this topic. The science of metals chemistry and its physical engineering is called metallurgy. The practitioner of this science is known as a metallurgist. The machinist, not being a metallurgist, still needs to know a good deal about this science if they are going to fabricate these metals. Therefore, this topic, combined with few others will provide the metallurgical basics for the machinist.
